At the break-out of World War I, no one could have suspected that the toll would be so heavy.
More than a hundred young men were mobilised for the duration of the war and many went
voluntarily. Several of these young men died on the Field of Honor.
Pervijze was the scene of complete devastation as were so many other villages in
'Flanders Fields'. For the duration of the war, the people of Pervijze had to run away,
most of them to France.
Many civilians were killed because they ran away too late or they refused to leave their
hometown that was lying in the middle of frontal fire. To illustrate this :
on December 1, 1915, 48 civilians still remained in Pervijze after being bombarded
for more than a year!
Other civilians were killed by enemy fire outside Pervijze.
On the war monument in Pervijze, not everybody from Pervijze that was killed
(military of civilian) is mentioned ! Some of them are forgotten.
It is my intent to remember also these 'forgotten' persons here.
